In an unprecedented move, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has nominated deported lawyer and self-proclaimed NRM ‘General’ Miguna Miguna to fill in the vacant Deputy Governorship position.
Sonko made the nomination in a letter addressed to Nairobi County Assembly speaker Hon. Beatrice Elachi.
The letter, clearly bearing Sonko’s signature, read in part:
I hereby forward my nominee, lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor. The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the constitution, the leadership and integrity act, the elections act and the county government act.
Elachi confirmed receipt of the letter on Thursday morning but said no vetting will take place until after the Immigration Department confirms Miguna’s Kenyan citizenship.
Miguna Miguna is currently in Canada after the Kenyan government forcibly deported him on 6th February. Miguna attempted to reenter the country on 26th March but security forces and the immigration department wouldn’t let him through.
Allegedly, Miguna was drugged and forcibly put on a Dubai-bound flight in the second deportation.
Dr. Miguna’s deportation woes stem from his participation in the unconstitutional swearing in of opposition figure Raila Odinga as ‘the People’s President.’
He was expected to try reentering the country for the second time on Wednesday 16th May but cancelled at the last minute. Miguna said that the cancellation was due to the Immigration Department’s failure to issue him with a valid Kenyan passport, despite court orders to do so.
Miguna is yet to respond to the nomination.
