Homeboyz Bus Accident Death Toll Rises to 50

More casualties have succumbed to injuries sustained from the grisly accident that happened in the wee hours of today morning at Fort Ternan.

The accident involved a Homeboyz bus, belonging to Western Cross Express Sacco, and happened along Londiani-Muhoroni road.

Accounts from eyewitnesses and survivors indicate that the accident may have been caused by reckless driving.

A survivor narrated how their departure from Nairobi for Western turned chaotic after the bus operators overloaded the bus that some passengers had to sit on the aisle.

The bus was speeding downhill when the driver lost control. The bus rolled over a considerable distance before ending up on a valley.

Meanwhile Inspector of Police Joseph Boinnet has said the bus owner and Sacco will be charged with operating outside licensed hours.

NTSA boss Francis Meja said that the bus was not licensed to operate at night.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga and DP William Ruto have led leaders in expressing sympathy and condoling with families and friends who have lost loved ones in the dawn accident.

  • Police have arrested the owner of the ill-fated Homeboyz bus. Bernard Ishindu Shitiabayi was arrested alongside Cleophas Shimanyula, a Kakamega tycoon and prominent personality in Western Cross Express Sacco.
  • Death toll now stands at 58 after more victims succumbed to injuries. It is has been reported that the bus had 71 passengers, while it was only licensed to carry 49.
  • The bus driver was 72 years old, 12 years older then the legal age limit of 60 years.
